On Haunted Ground Tour: Author Interview!

This is my stop for On Haunted Ground Tour (by Dark Mind Book Tours) and I'm SO happy!
Welcome to Darkest Sins, Lisa!
(Lisa Rogers)

Lisa Rogers worked in the medical field until she hung up her stethoscope to help her husband pursue the dream of owning his own business. After opening the business while also raising their two, she insists, wonderful children, the time has come for her to fulfill a dream of her own—which is, was, and will always be, writing. With her children now grown, she dedicates her time to writing and learning about paranormal phenomena. When she’s not strapped to her computer at their rural Oklahoma home, she can generally be found poking around a dilapidated old building or visiting some historical place, perhaps searching for her next “out of body” character.

Where you can find Lisa:
Blog - Facebook - Twitter - Goodreads

Here you can read the book summary: Lisa Rogers sensed that the house she bought with her husband Wes came with a ghost. But nothing prepared them for doors slamming on their own, objects flying, and the nightly appearance of a freaky green orb in their bedroom. Their two children had opposing views on the paranormal activity. While Keshia grew attached to the grandmotherly ghost who taught her not to be afraid of thunderstorms and the Native American spirit that tucked her into bed, her brother Troy wasn't quick to believe in their unearthly guests. This amazing true story details two decades of terrifying, funny, and heartwarming paranormal encounters--the mischievous entity that imitated the voice of each family member, the spool that "came to life" to chase the kids, the shocking events that shake Wes and Troy's skepticism--and the enduring love that keeps the family together through it all.

INTERVIEW WITH LISA ROGERS

You wrote this book in collaboration with your daughter, Keisha Swaim (who is going to have her own novel published soon from Spencer Hill Press). How was working together in a project so close for the both of you?

Keshia and I work on many projects together. Since we are both authors, we beta read for each other and just try to help one another out. We both have our strengths and weaknesses (I haven’t found her weaknesses yet, but I’m sure she has them. I mean she has to, right?)
One of my biggest weaknesses is grammar while that just happens to be one of her strongest points. She actually works as a copy editor, so how cool is that, for me anyway? Of course, she charges me an exuberant amount for her services. (I have to take her out for pizza once in awhile.)
But to get back to your question, when I first submitted On Haunted Ground, it did not contain Keshia’s chapter. The editors at Llewellyn were so intrigued with her outlook on ghosts that they asked if she would contribute a chapter to the book. Since this book is our family’s story, Keshia was thrilled to add her thoughts—of course, that came after we went out for pizza.

When did you decide to put your personal experiences on paper?

With our house having so much activity, I used to always say that “one day” I was going to write a book about our experiences. Even though it took a quarter of a century, one day finally came.

What strong emotions have you felt while writing On Haunted Ground?

Even though I’ve wanted to write this book for a long time, I must admit I had some serious reservations about trying to get it published. Because this is such a personal account of our lives, I considered writing it under a pen name and even changing all of our names in the book.  After going back and forth with this a hundred times, it was my family who convinced me to use our real names.

• Did anything strange happen during the writing process of this book?

By “strange” I assume you mean ghostly activity, which by all accounts isn’t so strange at my house. But, yes there were many times when I was working on the book that I absolutely knew I wasn’t alone.  I’ve always felt as though our ghosts wanted me to tell our story and I often felt as though someone…or several someone’s were standing behind me and reading over my shoulder.

What was the best episode you have experienced and talked about it in the book?

You have to remember, I have lived in a very active house for 28 years. I have experienced so many things that it would be impossible for me to pick just one and say, “that was the best.” I’ve had things that stand out in my mind as the funniest, the scariest, the most memorable, and the you’ve got to be kidding me categories. So for the sake of answering your question I’ll choose one incident that filled most of these categories at once.

We had an entity that came with the house. We called her the “green ghost.” This ghost had been with us for many years and had actually woven her way into the hearts of my daughter and myself. Both of us looked at her as a grandmotherly figure. For years, the only physical evidence we saw of her was when she manifested herself into a green glowing ball of light, which she did every night. But one day she appeared to me as a woman. She looked as real as anyone did—that is until she vanished right before my eyes.

Is there any of them that keep happening?

Things tend to happen in stages. There were times when the same action was repeated countless times, such as always finding the cabinet doors open, having our voices imitated, and my daughter being tucked into bed at night by unseen hands. All of these incidents happened time and time again until one day they just stopped. When they stopped, I assumed the entity responsible for the incidents had either grown bored or had moved on.  Today, the most likely thing someone might notice in our home is the activity in my office. This room started getting a lot of attention when I started writing which was about six years ago. It isn’t uncommon to hear noises come out of that room when no one is in there. You can often hear the chair roll across the floor and papers shuffle. Unfortunately whoever, (I think it’s more than one) hangs out in there never bothers to finish any of my work for me. They do however connect to the Internet.

I know you’re used to it by now, but how scary it was the first time a presence made itself acknowledged?

Before we even bought the house, I sensed it came with a ghost. I don’t know why that didn’t bother me, but it didn’t. I have always just accepted the fact that ghosts exist. My only explanation for this is that perhaps I had an encounter before I was taught not to believe in ghost.

You wrote another book about Ghosts, but a fictional one, Angelina’s Secret. Would you like to introduce it to us and perhaps tell a curiosity you think we would particularly like to know?

Thanks for mentioning this Silvia. Angelina’s Secret is my debut novel, and it was just released Feb. 1, 2012. It is about a young girl who discovers she can see ghosts, which of course makes her family question her sanity.  It takes a little while, but Angelina finally accepts her gift, and much like me, she simply accepts that ghosts are just a natural part of life. I’m particularly proud of this book and hope to do a sequel. If anyone is interested, in learning more about it, there is a free download of a short prequel titled Angelina’s Friend. It can be found here
Angelina's Friend.
Speaking of free stuff you can also read my non-fiction contribution to the Llewellyn journal. This gives a little more insight to my thoughts on ghosts and it can be found here Are You Haunted?.

Thanks for having me Silvia.

Thanks for your time, Lisa! You already know this but still, you're always very welcome to Darkest Sins! ;)

"Trust In Me" by Skye Warren

TRUST IN ME BY SKYE WARREN

SERIES: Dark Erotica #2

PUBLISHER: Skye Warren
GENRE: Dark Erotica
SOURCE: Review copy received from the author

SUMMARY
Mia longs for the daily torture to end, but one last task keeps her holding on. In a betrayal of the crime lord who pulled her from the gutter, she’ll free the shipment of human cargo, and if she’s lucky, die in the process. The alternative is unfathomable, even to a woman well-versed in erotic torture. But luck abandons her yet again when she meets the security expert in charge of the shipment and finds herself face to face with her childhood crush. The man she once begged for help. The man who failed her. Tyler Martinez is an undercover FBI agent with one chance to right the wrongs of his past. Thrust deep into the seedy world of human trafficking, he must put aside his guilt over abandoning Mia all those years ago in order to save her now. Someone’s pulling the strings in this sadistic play on trust, but Tyler and Mia may not live long enough to see the curtain fall. Trust in Me is a story of erotic pain and incipient romance, spiraling ever faster toward betrayal or redemption.
WARNING: This book contains explicit scenes of dubious consent, graphic violence and sex. It also depicts abuse and captivity situations. Not appropriate for anyone uncomfortable with these situations or anyone under the age of eighteen. This is a work of fiction.

MY REVIEW

"Trust In Me" is strong, dark and twisted, exactly how a dark erotica book should be. It's easy to find events and concepts that disturb you in this genre, but the trick is all in the story. When you find one so well written, as this one, there's nothing you can do, you're going to be captivated from the beginning to the end and yes, shocked or not, you will enjoy every minute.
Many things happen during the reading, the kind that leave you wondering, and sometimes really surprised... I wasn't expecting the story to evolve like it did and I honestly loved it! I was overwhelmed with fear, love, sadness, lust, but even lots of hope. Mia and Tyler definitely gave me the best mix of emotions I could have asked for and they totally blew my mind.

Beautifully written, this story is still playing in my mind and I definitely recommend it to all those readers who really know how to embrace the dark in a book, because those are the ones who can definitely see how really powerful this genre is and so appreciate amazing authors like Skye Warren.

Dark Mercy Tour: Excerpt & Review!

Dark Mercy Tour ends today (by Dark Mind Book Tours) and I'm its last stop!
Welcome to Darkest Sins, Zoe!

Zoe Winters writes quirky and sometimes dark paranormal romance (and dark fantasy). Her favorite colors are rainbow and clear. Where you can find Zoe: Blog - TwitterFacebook - Amazon - Goodreads

Here you can read the summary: 1955, Las Vegas, Nevada Angeline has been on the run from her sire, Linus, for centuries. She’s tired, and she’s lonely. High from mescaline-induced blood, she sees a sign—a church that seems to glow in the distance—and she knows. Her future mate is in that building.
Important Author’s Note: Dark Mercy is the beginning of Hadrian and Angeline’s story, not the end. Their HEA will happen later in their own full-length novel. This story is important both for the overall series and for this couple, but it’s not their HEA. Just a mild disclaimer so no one goes in with false expectations for this story.
About the Series: Dark Mercy is a story in the Pretverse (the world of Zoe Winters’ Preternaturals series). If you enjoy it, you may enjoy the main series (paranormal romance set in this same world). Each book has its own romance story wrapped up by the end, as well as a larger background story that slowly unfolds with each book. Dark Mercy is a part of that overall unfolding. Books can be read in any order given that each book has its own romance, the numbers are just the order they are written in and should be read in if you want the story “in order”.

DARK MERCY EXCERPT
USED WITH PERMISSION, COPYRIGHT 2012 ZOE WINTERS

“A-Angeline. I haven’t seen you here in awhile.” Could he not get that schoolboy stutter out of his voice?
“I was fighting temptation,” she replied coyly.
Hadrian cleared his throat. “And did you succeed?”
“No.”
She glided closer—or floated. The length of her dress made it impossible to tell which. She stopped mere inches in front of him. He should have taken a step back, should have excused himself, but her strange eyes locked with his. They drew him in, hypnotizing him.
If he were another type of man, he would have proclaimed she was a witch putting him under a spell, but it was just as much his responsibility as hers for not moving away. It was his fault for not finding a replacement for midnight Mass. His mind became fuzzy.
What was I just thinking about?
Her eyes pulled him in, making the rest of the room swirl around him in a slow blur. If he’d looked down to find them both floating and spinning in the air, he wouldn’t have been surprised. He was dizzy from the delicious scent emanating from her.
Her voice was a siren’s song when she spoke again. “Forgive me, Father, for I’m about to sin.”
Angeline’s mouth tasted like hot cinnamon candy as her lips descended on his. Her lip gloss left his mouth tingling. She might burn him alive with a single kiss. She chuckled as she continued her exploration of his mouth, as if he’d stated his thought aloud and she found it amusing.
Somewhere deep inside him was the place that was screaming that this must not happen, but it sounded like it was shouting from far away down a long, dark hallway, disappearing into a tinny echo. Quickly overtaking that voice was one penetrating thought that refused to release him.
I want her. I want her. I want her. I want her. The thought happened in rhythm to the beat of his heart.
Her lips left his mouth and made a burning trail over his cheek and up to the lobe of his ear. “Father Hadrian.” It was a breathy pant that held all the promise of a new universe unfolding.
He couldn’t remember what she said after that or even if she said something after that. The pounding of his own blood rushing through his ears—and other blood racing south in response to her nearness—had drowned out his ability to think or hear anything else but the lilting magic of her voice calling his name.
“Father Hadrian… ”
Her tone had gone from that of an angel to a writhing serpent as she rubbed her sinewy body against him. This was wrong. The thinking part of him clawed to get out. Something was all wrong about this, beyond the breaking of a vow. But he couldn’t form a coherent thought.
I want her. I want her. I want her.
“And you shall have me. Forever,” she said.
Had he spoken out loud? He wasn’t sure.
“I don’t know what’s wrong with me right now,” he said, as her fingers slid under the Roman collar.
It startled him. His collar. Where were his vestments? There were more layers of clothing, or there had been a few moments ago. He glanced down to find the vestments somehow on the floor of the sanctuary. He started to pull away.
“No, Father. Eyes right here on mine. Stay with me.”
His gaze shifted back to her eyes and his will merged with her again. He didn’t realize his shirt was off until the air from the chilly room hit his bare chest.
“Oh, what a surprise. You must work out. Don’t be shy, Father Hadrian. It’s a crime you never get to be inside a woman with this body.”

MY REVIEW

Forgive me, Father, for I’m about to sin... I'm going to crush on Father Adrian even more than you could ever think... After all my blog is called Darkest Sins, I think a crush like that is sinfully appropriate, isn't it?

As the author's note says, "Dark Mercy" is the beginning of Hadrian and Angeline's story, that means you don't have to expect a HEA here. Now, am I the only one who enjoys a non-HEA when she finds one? Because I have to say this, despite the fact that I'm thrilled I will be able to read more about those gorgeous characters and their story, I thought that if only this was a full-lenght novel, the finale would have been a hell of a great one! Don't get me wrong, I love HEA (who doesn't, right?), but when I find a dark story like this one, I love the unexpected even more than usual, and if the events turn out to be different from my expectations (and even more exciting), I can only be a very happy reader.
"Dark Mercy" has a special overwhelming charm that makes you curious from the very beginning and in the end leaves you think about a possible dark side that everyone could have inside... You got it, woah if this story is not one to read!

BLOOD BETRAYED EXCERPT

Obviously inflicted that night, their redness had begun to fade to a deep purple where fingers had pressed roughly into her tender skin. Solenne saw the look of shock he didn't try to hide from his eyes and scrambled to grab a shirt from the back of a nearby chair.
"What is this?"
"Nothing. Just leave it be."
Saint took the shirt from her hand and threw it on the bed. "No." Dipping his head, he softly pressed his lips to the darkest bruise on her left shoulder. Fucking Archon!
Gingerly, he ran his fingers over her skin, gently touching each bruise before raising his head to look at her.  "Solenne, I promise you here and now I'm going to kill the one who did this. I'll drain him drop by drop until he begs for the release a stake will bring."
Eyes wide with tears looked up at him, their blue color pale and watery. "Saint, don't touch me like this if you don't mean it."
He meant it. He'd meant it in every dream he'd had of finally returning to her. Taking her face in his hands, he kissed her long and deep, drinking in the delicious taste of the lips he'd missed for so long.
God, he'd yearned to once again feel the touch of her skin next to his! Year upon year of lonely nights interrupted only by pale replacements ebbed from his memory now as his hands once again learned of the woman he'd always loved.
Solenne molded to him, setting his senses ablaze. His body craved to join with her, to finally reclaim that piece of his heart lost so painfully nearly a century ago. He slid his hands under her shirt to her breasts and worshipped them—their fullness in his palms, their deep pink tips pebbled from desire that begged for his mouth's attention.
"Come."
Taking her hand, he led her to the shower. "Don't move." A quick twist of the faucet handle and warm water streamed down from the showerhead.
"Do I look like I need a shower?" she asked in a teasing tone as he slipped the tank top over her head.
Saint looked down at her sexy mouth as he slid his thumbs under the waist of her shorts. "Always fighting me."
Crouching in front of her, he slid the shorts down her legs and off her feet. Eye level with her pussy, he looked up and licked his lips. "I hope you don't plan on fighting me now."
He didn't wait for a reply before he drew his finger up her wet slit. Solenne's eyebrows knitted and she bit her lip. Her eyes slowly closed and tiny moans filled his ears.
"Don't close your eyes. Watch me."
Solenne obeyed and her eyes grew wide as he slid his thumbs through her delicate folds to open her up, unveiling to his eager eyes her excited clit. Saint inched closer to her soft skin and whispered against her, "I've waited so long for this."

MY REVIEW

Even if I'm usually not into gore, this time I couldn't help myself, I was totally enchanted by this book. Action is what prevails on everything, of course you say, it's a war book, but  be aware, it's a war like no other... Don't even think for a second about the standard vampires we're used to think of, or the classic vampires vs humans war. We have vampires against vaempires here and that 'e' is not just what makes the difference between the two names, but it's the key to the originality and the real charm of this book. Let's just say someone had a very powerful evolution...

Daniel and Cassandra are two amazing, very strong characters, and one of the things I loved the most is that Thomas Winship managed to make great justice with both point of views, male and female. It's not something easy, to be honest before reading Vaempires Revolution I would have thought about this like a mission impossible, but Tom did it and he did it extremely good!

Reading this book was like watching a movie. I visualized every single scene in such a clear way that I was practically living the story. I felt every emotion the characters were feeling like they were mine, and without realizing it I had completely devoured the book. And believe me, after you reach the speechless end, you will die to read more!

TRAILERS REVEAL
INTRODUCTION BY THOMAS WINSHIP

Hello everyone. I’m Thomas Winship, author of the Væmpires books—a new, ongoing vampire series that explores the question: what if vampires evolved?

It is no exaggeration to say that this is one of the most exciting days of my life, as we will reveal not one, but two amazing trailers for Væmpires!

Before we do so, however, I’d like to prolong the suspense by telling you a bit about my life, my hopes and dreams, my accomplishments and failures, and the shape of the world in general …

LOL! I’m crazy, but not
that crazy.

Instead, I will ask you to please indulge me while I give credit where credit is most assuredly due.

I was aware of the need for video promos prior to the release of
Væmpires: Revolution. With an anemic budget and an overinflated ego, I went about the creation of a half-dozen related promos over a two-month period. Subscribing to the theory that “something is better than nothing,” I posted them on my YouTube channel and waited for at least one to go viral.

I’m still waiting.

In my defense, those videos represent my first attempts at such an endeavor. But even as I admit that, I realize there’s little consolation in it. It’s just not the same as when, for instance, a child writes his/her name for the first time or perhaps when they make a first drawing in school. For the child, that output represents a true accomplishment. I’m not sure what my outputs represent, but applying the phrase “true accomplishment” involves a liberal (and possibly illegal) amount of poetic license.

In fact, doing so would probably get my license revoked.

Nevertheless, I knew I had a problem. I needed a real trailer, by someone with real skill. Still, while admitting that a problem exists may be the first step toward recovery, we all know that those other eleven steps can be a real …

Anyway, despite rumors to the contrary, finding a talented, trustworthy, available video editor is not as easy as it sounds. It’s worse than looking for a needle in a haystack, because, to do that, it’s understood that the haystack is somewhere in close proximity and that the needle you’re searching for has been somehow identified as
the needle.

What I needed to do was identify a needle from among all the haystacks in the world. Easy to do with the Internet at my fingertips, right?

Do me a favor: run a Google search for “video editor.”

My search returned 108,000,000 results. Now, I’m not a neophyte. I realized I could narrow a search down, or go to social media sites and ask for recommendations, or even swing by the Computer Sciences Department of a college where I teach. There are many things that can make a search easier.

Easier, but no less daunting.

Because I needed someone with more than just ability or credibility or availability—I needed someone who could handle the technical, tangible aspects of the job while also handling the intangible: performing magic by reading my mind … because I didn’t know what I wanted.

So, I searched … and didn’t make a decision. And I researched … and still couldn’t decide.

Because it was a monumental decision.

In fact, since I’ve already dragged children into this mess—and isn’t that what we always do, drag children into our messes?—I’ll go so far as to say that selecting a video editor is harder than naming your child.

Let’s face it, if you stick your child with a regrettable name, it’s the child—not you—who walks around with that albatross for the rest of his/her life. And the child can always hide that horrid name behind a cool nickname … whereas picking the wrong person to create a book trailer is something you’ll be saddled with forever.

To make a long, convoluted, story short—I’m glad I waited.

The first time I saw Silvia Paoletta’s trailer for Emma Mills’
Witchblood, I had a feeling that she was the person I’d been waiting for. When I saw her work for Jana Oliver’s Demon Trapper Series a few weeks later, I knew she was. You can see them here.

And you can certainly see her latest creations below.

During my brief writing career, I’ve been blessed to work with remarkable people. Perhaps I’m freakishly lucky, perhaps someone upstairs really likes me, or perhaps I unwittingly sold my soul; whatever the reason, I don’t care.

Silvia is everything I hoped for in a video editor … and more. She’s talented, she’s amazing, and, yes, she is magical.

Thank you, Silvia, for bringing magic into my life and into my world of Væmpires.

Without further ado, I’d like to introduce:

Væmpires

A post-apocalyptic world where vampires and humans live in peace and harmony … until væmpires upset the balance.

Saying that Tom is an amazing person to work with would be the understatement of the century, but still!

Making those trailers was a total pleasure for me, the same I had while reading
Vaempires Revolutions and Vaempires Christmas. Trust me, Tom has created an exciting world you really want to read about... like right now!

Thanks
for giving me the honour to create the trailers for your unique series, Tom and a huge thanks for all the amazing words you said and keep saying about me! :)
