Room 3 Tour: Guest Post & Giveaway!

Today I'm happy to host a stop for Room 3 Tour, organized by Dark World Books!
(Click on the banner above to see the schedule.)

Bartender and songwriter Kelli Foster had always kept her eyes trained on the dream of stardom as a means to escape her small-town life. That focus blinded her to threat right in front of her: a bar patron who lulls her into a false sense of security and abducts her for a shadowy organization, taking her to a cabin in the middle of nowhere.
Desperate to escape and return to the world she thought she knew, Kelli bides her time, complying with her captors as they force her into a dream world where she must unravel the meaning of a song to free a hostage trapped inside a tree. Failure to free the hostage means only one thing: death, for her and the hostage.
Joined by an important test subject whose sanity unravels almost from the start, Kelli attempts to free them both. When the escape fails, Kelli’s life becomes even more difficult, and she learns that her assumptions about her life – and the world itself – could all be false. As events spiral out of control, Kelli finds herself caught in a battle between godlike beings that hold her fate, and that of the entire Organization, in their hands.

Born and raised in the rural Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, Jonathan wrote his first fantasy/sci-fi novel at the age of 13. After studying writing and communication at James Madison University, Jonathan turned his passion for writing into a full-time technical writing career in the DC Metro area, working for companies like Sprint/Nextel, Time Warner Cable, and Sirius XM Radio, where he had an opportunity to combine his love of music with his love of writing. He may have drifted away from fiction at times, but it was always his first love – and he always returned to it. Now living in Bethesda with his wife, two cats, and two quirky guinea pigs for which his publishing company is named, he crafts the kinds of stories that he had always hoped to read but just couldn’t quite find.

Hi there, and welcome to today’s stop on the Room 3 2013 Spring Tour. For those of you who aren’t familiar with my writing, Room 3 is my second full-length novel and something of a side story to my current ongoing series, the Among the Dead trilogy, which includes the already-published title The Corridors of the Dead and the currently-in-progress City of the Dead, due out next year.

Among the Dead is something of a meta-fiction “wrapper” for all of my other stories; the central concept of Among the Dead is that our universe is a lot more than it appears on the surface. Our universe is just one of many, and these other universes, known as Aethyrs, represent the multitude of possible realities. These realities can include anything from a world where a man can speak to the dead through a ham radio (as in my forthcoming short story On the Air) to worlds where a race of fallen angels vie for control of this Multiverse (as in Among the Dead). The framework really allows for a flexibility to tie multiple elements together and give you, the reader, the idea of a much vaster world at work behind the scenes within any one of my stories.

While a side story, Room 3’s plot is very important to the trilogy; Kelli Foster’s struggles shape the narrative of City of the Dead and come into focus in the final book of the trilogy, Portal of the Dead. As Room 3 unfolds, Kelli discovers (much like the protagonists in the trilogy) that she is a small but important cog in a previously-unseen world that threatens our own reality. As Kelli and her roommate Carla tear down the walls of their small corner of the Multiverse, much larger players cast their shadows onto their lives.

The most important of these players is a character known only as “The Senior”. He is the one who pulls the strings of the organization that has kidnapped Carla and Kelli. He is the one who has directed his employees to torture the pair and record the results toward some as-yet-unknown ends. He is also the one who represents the last obstacle to their freedom.

Later this year, Pathways of the Dead will reveal the truth behind the Senior’s identity and his importance to the events that are rapidly reshaping the Multiverse. Kelli’s actions at the end of Room 3 resonate strongly in the experiences of the half-man/half-angel Grabbe, who is “drafted” to take the place of the women who have been dragged into Room 3.

My intention is to give the reader a view into this multiverse from multiple angles, no matter which of these books he or she is picking up for the first time – each of them have consequences that continue far beyond the last page of one story.
