Waiting on Wednesday (#56)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill @ Breaking The Spine
in which we have the opportunity to spotlight upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pick: YEAR ONE by Nora Roberts
Expected publication: December 5th, 2017 by Piatkus

In her newest work, the stunning beginning to an epic hardcover trilogy, #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts weaves an enthralling saga of suspense, survival, and the journey that will unite a desperate group of people to fight the battle of their lives…

It began on New Year’s Eve.

The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed—and more than half of the world’s population was decimated.

Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magic rose up in its place. Some of it is good, like the witchcraft worked by Lana Bingham, practicing in the loft apartment she shares with her lover, Max. Some of it is unimaginably evil, and it can lurk anywhere, around a corner, in fetid tunnels beneath the river—or in the ones you know and love the most.

As word spreads that neither the immune nor the gifted are safe from the authorities who patrol the ravaged streets, and with nothing left to count on but each other, Lana and Max make their way out of a wrecked New York City. At the same time, other travelers are heading west too, into a new frontier. Chuck, a tech genius trying to hack his way through a world gone offline. Arlys, a journalist who has lost her audience but uses pen and paper to record the truth. Fred, her young colleague, possessed of burgeoning abilities and an optimism that seems out of place in this bleak landscape. And Rachel and Jonah, a resourceful doctor and a paramedic who fend off despair with their determination to keep a young mother and three infants in their care alive.

In a world of survivors where every stranger encountered could be either a savage or a savior, none of them knows exactly where they are heading, or why. But a purpose awaits them that will shape their lives and the lives of all those who remain.

The end has come. The beginning comes next.

What do you think? And what are you waiting for?

"Chasing Embers" by James Bennett

SERIES: Ben Garston #1
GENRE: Fantasy
SOURCE: Publisher

There's nothing special about Ben Garston. Or so he'd have you believe. He won't tell you, for instance, that he's also known as RED BEN. Or that the world of myth and legend is more real than you think. Because it's his job to keep all that a secret. But now a centuries-old rivalry has resurfaced, and the delicate balance between his world and ours is about to be shattered. Something is hiding in the heart of the city—and it's about to be unleashed.

If you expect a fantasy story like the ones you are used to, you are mistaken. If you think this is a regular urban fantasy book, you are wrong again. But if you are thoroughly looking to be dragged into an urban world where myths and legends are real but unknown—or foolishly dismissed—then bingo!

The world described by the author is the sad truth we live in with the exception of dragons and other mythical creatures surrounding us, although they are extremely careful not to let humans know of their presence. It's important their identities stay hidden, and that is why Ben can't share his real-self with the woman he loves, Rose, who is quite a surprising heroine. But if romance is not easy for Ben—is it in the cards for him at all?—the danger he has to face now is even worse... I'm usually more for dialogues than descriptions, but this book wouldn't work well without the latter and I personally think the author did a fantastic job. The whole mythology is fascinating, the background given to the readers is enrapturing, and I find myself lucky because I've been in all the main locations where the story takes place, so it was like visiting them all over again and I loved it.

An action-packed legendary story that sucked me in the moment I started the read. To all lovers of fantasy—and DRAGONS!—I'd suggest you to go Chasing Embers. *winks*

"Mr. Sinful" by Serenity Woods

SERIES: Heartfelt #1
PUBLISHER: Serenity Woods
GENRE: Contemporary/Erotic Romance
SOURCE: Freebie
LINKS: Goodreads

Faith Hillman is in trouble. She’s writing an article on ways to spice up your love life for her popular blog, but she’s hit a major snag—she hasn’t experienced any of the Seven Sexy Sins on her list. Luckily, her brother’s best friend, Rusty Thorne, offers to help with her research. Having had a crush on him since the age of twelve, Faith agrees, on the proviso that he signs a contract keeping their short-term relationship a secret. Her brother once decked him for kissing her on her eighteenth birthday, so Rusty’s happy to concur. While they work their way through the wicked list, Rusty enjoys showing Faith all the sexual delights he can think of. But it’s only as the sins draws to a close that he understands that, where love is concerned, he’s the student and Faith’s the teacher. He’s determined to keep to the terms of the contract, but when it comes to the crunch, will he be able to let her go?
WARNING: Includes rebellious hero who enjoys inserting Tab A into Slots B, C, and even occasionally D. Also includes highly inappropriate use of a Mars Bar.

I spotted this book a while ago on a friend's blog, and I remember clicking on it because of the title. After reading the blurb, I knew it was definitely a story to try because, seriously, sins? Seven dark(est) sins? *winks*

I had a great time with this book for more reasons than you may think, one being the fact that Faith has a blog and her 'experiment' is mainly—is it?—for her readers. The posts, the snippets of comments, the—sometimes embarrassing—questions that pop up, and the whole interaction just work splendidly for a reader who happens to be a blogger as well. I smiled, I sighed, I covered my mouth trying to suppress a laugh at inappropriate moments—oh my, that warning wasn't kidding—and I constantly rooted for these two. Faith and Rusty are a perfect match indeed, and not only in the sheets... If I liked them as lovers, I loved them as friends, and I appreciated every spicy encounter moment spent in their company, even that sad cloud surrounding one of them. HA, told you there was more than one reason, and wouldn't you like to know more now?

Go on, grab this book, let Mr. Sinful show you how pleasurable is inserting Tab A into Slot B, C, and occasionally D, and enjoy hanging out with an interesting group of friends.

"Bodyguard" by Tabatha Kiss

SERIES: Snake Eyes #1
PUBLISHER: Tabatha Kiss
GENRE: Romantic Suspense
SOURCE: Freebie

Everyone has a celebrity they’re head over heels for. Mine is Roxie Roberts but I knew her before the fashion and the fame.
Before all of that crap, she was my stepsister, Dani. I thought I’d never see her again. Her father kicked me out with nothing but the clothes on my back, so I joined the army to become something she’d be proud of. Instead, I became a killer for the deadliest underground organization in the world, Snake Eyes. They didn’t give me a choice, but I couldn’t live like that. I faked my death and I’ve been in hiding ever since, determined to spend the rest of my days atoning for my sins. Somehow, Snake Eyes found out I’m still alive. They can’t track me down, so they’re going after the one person they know I care about to lure me out. I won’t let them hurt you, Dani. Even if it kills me.
They told me my stepbrother was dead.
The guy who kissed me on my birthday and ran out of town the next day. He didn’t even say goodbye. I focused on my work and became one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. Every girl wants to be me and every guy wants to date me. But all I’ve ever wanted is Fox. I wasn’t sure I could forgive him for leaving me but now that he’s back… I can’t resist him. Fox promised that he’d never let anyone touch me. Himself included. He won’t corrupt America’s Sweetheart. Even if I want him to…

Don't you just love when a book you grab for free turns out to be a page-turner and you feel like that give-me-the-other-instalments-right-now kind of demanding reader? My, my, I crossed paths with the deadliest underground organization and yet, I've never felt more alive...

I confess I started this book with no big expectations, the author was new to me and I honestly kept getting lots of disappointing freebies lately, so I thought the best approach was to simply read without overthinking about it. Man, Fox made quite difficult not to overthink... About him, that is! It's a mix of things, really, his background, his skills, his caring for Dani, his body everything about Fox makes him a very interesting character. And the most amazing thing is that he feels real, and so Dani. Although they are facing an extreme(ly dangerous) situation, their banters, their fighting to not give in—too soon—to temptation, and the way they act/react still feel believable. Add to this lots of action and intriguing secondary characters, and you'll see the appealing of this book.

If you're into fast-paced romantic suspense with a great chemistry between the characters, I'd tell you to grab this one and let it do its job. In case of a sudden craving, remember there are more books in the series.
